Remembering someone with a star

Last updated 1 November 2026

Naming a star is a gentle way to remember someone. Many families find comfort in having a real star, recorded in that person's name, that they can look up at on anniversaries, birthdays, or on any clear night.

A tribute that stays

Every star we register is a real star. From November 2026 each one is listed with its catalogue number, its exact position and its constellation. It is entered in the Intergalactic Star Database under the name you choose, and no star is given to two people in our registry.

From November 2026 each star also has its own page on this website. Family members anywhere in the world can look it up with the Database Number, see it on a live map of the sky, and print their own copy of the certificate.

Choosing the words

The name is printed exactly as you type it. Some families use the person's full name; others choose something more personal:

  • "In memory of Margaret Ellis"
  • "Dad, forever in our hearts"
  • A name only the family would know

What the pack contains

A Certificate of Registry, a Star Area Co-ordinates Sheet with the star's position and the times of year it is highest, a welcome letter and a fold-out star chart. Many people frame the certificate.

Finding the star together

Looking for the star can become a small ritual. The co-ordinates sheet shows which months it is best placed; on a clear, dark night a pair of binoculars will show it. Our guide explains each step.
