Questions and answers

Last updated 1 November 2026

The questions we are asked most. If yours isn't here, contact us.

Your star

Is it a real star?

Yes. Every star we register is a real star. From November 2026 each new star is chosen from the Hipparcos catalogue and listed with its catalogue number, its position and its constellation.

Is the name official?

Your star's name is recorded in the Intergalactic Star Database. Official star names are decided by the International Astronomical Union, which doesn't recognise names from any commercial registry, so the name won't appear in scientific catalogues. More on this.

Can two people have the same star?

Not in our registry. Each star in the Intergalactic Star Database is given to one name only.

Can I see my star without a telescope?

Most of our stars are just beyond what the eye can see on its own, so a pair of ordinary binoculars is best. Your Star Area Co-ordinates Sheet shows where to look and when the star is highest. How to find your star.

Finding it online

Where is my Database Number?

On your Certificate of Registry and your Star Area Co-ordinates Sheet. It starts with ISD followed by seven digits. On our star finder, ISD is already filled in, so just type the digits.

Why can't I find my star on the website?

Stars registered before November 2026 are held in our original registry, which isn't connected to this website. Here is what you can do. If your star was registered from November 2026 and doesn't appear, check the number and contact us.

Can I print another copy of my certificate?

Yes, for stars registered from November 2026. Find your star and print the certificate at A5 or A4, and the co-ordinates sheet, in colour or black and white, as often as you like. US paper sizes are supported too.

The gift

What is in the gift pack?

A Certificate of Registry, a Star Area Co-ordinates Sheet, a welcome letter and a fold-out star chart of the night sky.

How do I order?

Our gift pack is £13.99 on Amazon. Type the name for your star when you order, and we register it and post the pack.

What name can I choose?

Most people choose a person's name, but it can be anything meaningful: a couple, a pet, a date or a phrase. We print it exactly as you type it.
